Working remotely holds many benefits such as enabling us to work from anywhere in the world, allowing us to have flexible work schedules and not requiring long commutes.
However, as of today, each one of us might have begun to notice some negative effects it has on us. Here are a few of our observations:

1. Lack of communication: working from home means that you hardly ever meet your colleagues in person, which certainly affects teamwork. And let's face it, some of your colleagues can only be recognized by the smiley face on their avatars :).

Patryk and Antoni have been interning in the AI department for a month now. Today, we've discovered their internship expectations and surprises 

Hi, my name is Patryk, and I'm a recent graduate in computer science from the Opole University of Technology. So far, I've mainly focused on web development topics in my studies. However, when the opportunity arose, I decided to try my hand in the field of AI. I've been on an internship for about a month now.  

At the beginning, when I started my internship in the AI department, I had a certain level of knowledge about AI. However, I wasn't sure about the exact nature of my role and what would be expected of me. I hoped to have a chance to learn and develop my skills, but I wasn't certain about the specific projects that awaited me. 

In reality, working as an intern in the AI department turned out to be not only an opportunity for learning but also an intense teamwork. Collaborating with other AI specialists has become an integral part of my daily work. Meetings, discussions, and solving problems together are the foundation of our work. This allows us to gain experience, share knowledge, and learn the importance of communication within a team. 

I assumed that my main tasks would involve coding and creating models. 

Apart from coding, I also have the opportunity to work on data collection and processing, as well as result analysis. Another significant aspect is research to find the most suitable solutions. 

I thought I would mainly work on deep learning and neural network projects. 

In reality, it’s actually more interesting than I expected. Working in the AI department can cover various areas. These include natural language processing, image analysis, recommendation systems, and many, MANY others. 

I didn't expect to have direct control over every aspect of a project. 

We have a lot of flexibility when it comes to the project and technology we want to use. We can provide our input, propose solutions, and also test them. 

I didn't anticipate that I would be creating articles. 

Already within the first month, I had the opportunity to assist in creating several articles and sections of a larger report. 

Hi, my name is Antoni, and I'm an intern in the Artificial Intelligence department in the role of a Machine Learning Engineer. I joined BCF after completing two years of studies when I was looking for my first job in the IT industry. Currently, I'm working with large language models (such as GPT), exploring their potential, and keeping up with the latest advancements in this field. My goal is to apply these tools to simplify some tasks performed by humans. 

As an intern, I expected to receive mundane and uninteresting tasks. 

After two weeks of onboarding, I was assigned to a project where we, as interns, have the opportunity to independently explore new technologies and experiment with their applications. We use solutions that have emerged in recent months during the AI research wave, which don't have many available case studies. It's definitely not boring work, and I have the chance to grow. 

I thought I would primarily work with code and documentation. 

Communication, both with other team members and software users, is crucial and is a part of my daily work. Additionally, working in AI involves spending time on data acquisition and processing. I also occasionally get tasks to write text for reports or marketing materials. 

I believed I would only "write code" without creative tasks and would work with rigidly defined, proven technologies and tools. 

Part of my tasks is to search for technologies (libraries, language models) suitable for the project. Our supervisor ensures that the project is heading in the right direction but doesn't impose specific solutions or methods. 

I expected a hierarchical and rigidly regulated work environment.

Expectation vs. Reality: working as an Intern in the AI BCF Department 

There are several steps you can take to make sure you are prepared for a technical interview at a software company. Here are some of them:

1. Theoretical preparation. 

Make sure you have a solid foundation of knowledge in the technologies. This includes understanding of the core concepts, data structures and algorithms.

Be prepared for theoretical questions about the technologies you have mentioned in your CV. 

Also, be fully prepared and demonstrate the knowledge of core issues related to a given technical field. Provide various examples regarding your previous projects and how you operated it.
Anyone can learn any definition by heart, but a real-life example will be the best.


If you use this technology for the first time, you can write some simple examples for yourself (like a piece of code). This will help you to get acquainted with the actual structure and operation of a particular format. 

Be ready to discuss your work experience. You'll be asked to provide more details about the projects you've worked on. Remember, what kind of projects they were? What technologies and tools were used in them?

Have you had an unusual experience? Mention about this! Think about how it can help you in the job you are applying for. 

When you perform tasks in a programming language, you should understand how to read and write good code.

Before the interview, practice solving problems on different platforms. Here are some of them: CSSBattle, Codeforces.
Important! Remember that you are demonstrating your screen while doing the test task. Try to keep this in mind and close suspicious tabs :)

This is optional, but your reviewers will definitely appreciate your knowledge of trends and changes in technologies you are familiar with. This might include recent updates in languages, tools, or frameworks, etc.

If you have a friend or mentor who is an experienced programmer, ask them to give you a simulated technical talk. This will help you gain confidence and prepare for different scenarios.

Another good option is to watch some interview examples on YouTube. It provides a huge variety of different content, so you can analyze it from different perspectives.

Treat the technical recruiter as a future colleague. You usually don't stress out in front of work colleagues, do you?  Try to be calm and confident during the interview.

Remember that you are talking to the same people who can see if you are trying to cheat. 

Your honesty is an opportunity to adequately assess your real skills, as well as match you with the right project.

How to preprare for technical interview? 9 tips from our technical recruters

In the dynamic realm of artificial intelligence, breakthroughs continuously pave the way for smarter and more adaptable models. The latest milestone in this journey was the highly anticipated capability to fine-tune gpt-3.5-turbo! OpenAI's GPT-3.5 Turbo has already amazed us with its facility at comprehending context, generating human-like text and aiding diverse tasks. Now, with the added potential of fine-tuning, its efficiency is even greater. But that's not all – on the horizon, we're about to gain fine-tuning access for GPT-4, which will allow to enter a new era of AI capabilities! 

For now, let's focus on GPT 3.5's tuning capability and learn these simple steps to use its capability in your work. 


To begin your fine-tuning venture, you need to prepare a dataset in JSONL format. Your fine-tuning dataset should have a minimum of 10 examples, while optimal improvements tend to manifest with sets of 50 to 100 examples. Here's an example:

Each line in your JSONL file contains an object with a "messages" key that holds an array of three messages: 

the user message is your input to ChatGPT or its API 

the assistant message is the expected model response 

You can use a variety of ways to process your data into specified format. For example, you may use a simple Python script or utilize the ChatGPT Code Interpreter plugin to achieve the desired output. 

Once your fine-tuning dataset is ready, the next step involves uploading it to OpenAI. One of the simplest ways is to do it via Python script that utilizes an OpenAI library. 

To send the request we use openai.File.create. Remember to save your response or at least the file ID as it will be necessary for the next step. 

The final step of your journey is to initiate a fine-tuning job through the OpenAI API, again using a short Python script. 

Remember to replace "api_key" and “file_id” with your actual API key and file ID. Once the fine-tuning job is set up, you'll receive an email notification. Typically, training for a small dataset takes about 10 minutes. After this, you'll receive another email confirming the completion and details of your newly fine-tuned model. 

In a practical test case involving technology-related terms we have gotten 10 examples ready.  We have tasked the model with providing these terms along with their definitions in a specific JSON format. Our training set totalled about ~106k tokens, incurring a training cost of approximately $1. 

We have crafted an initial prompt with a system role to adapt, a TypeScript interface for the desired output, and clear instructions. After training, the prompt became succinct, omitting the system message and unnecessary details as well as TS interface specifications. 

Here is one of the results from the test cases, illustrating a comparison between the top structure of a full prompt before fine-tuning and the bottom one after fine-tuning. 

The purpose of our test was to shorten the length of complex prompts, simplify their overall structure and, most importantly, achieve a specific JSON output structure without the need to specify it in every prompt. Additionally, we aimed to establish a coherent context by guiding the model's answers through specific roles or interpretations. 

As we can see with the result, depending on your subjective model use, case fine-tuning might start providing expected results even after the minimal of 10 examples, if you follow it up with same structure requests as training examples.  

During conducted tests our fine-tuned model largely adapted to produce the desired output format across limited tests, effectively reducing prompt size and complexity. 

For cost analysis, we refer to openai.com/pricing: 

Training cost to hours depends entirely on your dataset with about 1 to 1.5 tokens per word on average. In usage both input and output tokens are 8 times more expensive with the fine-tuned model. The cost efficiency aspect of fine-tuning is highly subjective, stemming from your particular use case scenario. 

Fine-tuning unlocks a number of possibilities for developers:  

Improved steerability: Empowers users with the ability to guide the model more effectively by following instructions with greater accuracy. 

Reliable output formatting: Users can achieve greater predictability in model’s responses, ensuring desired outputs are provided consistently. For instance, maintaining a specific structure or format like JSON. 

Custom tone: Model can be fine-tuned to align better with a specific role or tone. 

Shorter prompts: Employing shorter prompts reduces token count, resulting in improved inference times and cost efficiency. 

Alternative to Prompt Chaining or Few-Shot Prompting: Depending on your use case, fine-tuning can simplify interactions with the model, providing an alternative to techniques like prompt chaining or few-shot prompting.

A daily meeting with an international company does require all participants to communicate their ideas in English, but it if far more beneficial for personal growth to actually participate in these conversations with a human-to-human approach – to initiate small talk, engage in topics relatable but not necessarily just work related if the situation allows. This is the genuine language experience which if you allow yourself, will shape your own language skill and command. Noting down any new phrases and vocab will help you in a long run too. As for written communication, there are many tools to help you yet an organic, handwritten message always remains on top of any AI. Just like with any craft – practice makes perfect. Writing often, or maybe even journaling, writing down ideas in English instead of your mother tongue is a great way to train your brain. And why not switch it up and hange your devices system language to English too? Many of the commands may be already well known to the user, therefore muscle memory plus new words will get remembered quickly, adding to ones vocabulary. 

Learning a language becomes much easier when it becomes a part of our daily routine – therefore just like with any habit forming it is necessary to make reading, listening and generally using the language a routine. When use of English to communicate at work is essential, adding an extra hour or two per week dedicated to learning and practice will enable to chisel and polish up one’s vocab and command of the language. 

So what’s to fit into those two hours of your weekly schedule?

Socials – whether it is Instagram, Facebook, YouTube or some other platform instead of devoting your time to doom scrolling why not give a chance and follow and subscribe to some accounts with fun and accessible English content. Just by viewing few reels, shorts or posts with new vocab, phrases and useful grammar you’ll be adding to your knowledge bit by bit. 

Educational institutes and publishers websites - British Council (especially for listening!), Macmillan, Pearson English, Oxford English Hub.

Apps – Elsa Speak, EWA English and Duolingo can be a handy learning aids if used regularly – with Duolingo being the most known and free for those with more advanced English it might just be too easy – it’s perfect to add basics of any other language though. As for more advanced learners EWA English has a great means of delivering knowledge – through known movie and series. Quizzes base around known scenes and quotes, making it easy and catchable for the users.

English Teacher’s blogs and materials – now there are so many it is hard to point out one – all one must do is google and find a blog to your liking. It is best however to follow a blog that is adequate to your needs – if your vocab is great but you just need a breakthrough to speak more freely a podcast or a YouTube channel will do you much more. Yet if we are looking to fill in gaps on grammar completing a sheet task (can do a pdf, no need to print), here are some of good recommendations: 
- Tutor Blog – vocabulary practice and useful communication practices
- Perfect English Grammar – lots and lots of clear and easy to use grammar practice sheets 
- ISL Collective – aimed at those who teach and learn English as a second language, worksheets and presentations


All in all, there is not denying that English had become a Lingua Franca, as much as a tool also but an undetachable part of the tech world, worldwide companies and business environment. As a language it is a skill many already possess, but when not used regularly, as with any skill, it may become rusty.

The blue light emitted by screens can interfere with your sleep quality, so choose a book or relaxation techniques before sleep. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night. With November having passed by quicker than we all might have anticipated, a very important milestone had also peaked - ChatGPT had turned 1 year old!

And what a journey it has been – the worldwide access to this tool has shaken not only the technological world. It’s been aiding people in various industries with whatever the generative AI could assisted them in – from help writing academical articles, providing with ready to use bits of necessary code to generating imagery that one could not find online – ChatGPT had it all covered. Safe to say, almost anyone with a bit of technological acumen had given in to try it.

ChatGPT was launched a year ago, on 30th November 2022, and if there ever were a right time to use the Pandora’s box metaphor, this is surely it. Powered by a large language model trained on 570 gigabytes of internet data (300 billion words), the chatbot can generate text that eerily mimics human speech – yet holding far more information than an actual person – think of the movie scene with Lelloo from “5th Element” sitting at the computer, learning and absorbing all knowledge to ever existed on the internet like a sponge.

And here are some of the various uses that the ChatGPT, either 3.5 or 4, can offer in the field of IT:

1. Customer Support: a generative AI bot system can assist in providing automated responses for customer inquiries and troubleshooting technical issues. It can offer real-time support, answer FAQs, and help users navigate through most common problems. Given that the customer will adhere to some rules of as to what and how to phrase the questions. Essentially, it may be used as a FAQ Chatbot. Creating a chatbot using Chat GPT allows users to ask questions and receive answers based on a predefined knowledge base. It can efficiently handle routine inquiries, freeing up human support agents to focus on more complex issues.

2. Conversational Interfaces: Chat GPT can be integrated into applications and websites to provide conversational interfaces. It enables users to interact naturally, ask questions and receive accurate information or perform specific actions.

3. Code Documentation: Developers can take advantage of Chat GPT to document their code and assist in finding code examples, explanations and API references. It helps in creating comprehensive and user-friendly code documentation – since ChatGPT learns with every use after a whole year of feedback it had generated its own database of most commonly used, copied and asked for bits of code.

4. Natural Language Processing (NLP) Applications: Chat GPT can power NLP applications like sentiment analysis, language translation, text classification and entity recognition. It enables analyzing and understanding natural language input for various use cases – but as much as it can imitate and deliver chunks of well written text, there is always a bit of area to polish up and correct. Even after a year, this technology had not learned it all from the human use of it and there could easily be a list put together with the chats most common faux pas words – which also make it easy to notice its ‘ work’ online.

However the pro version, ChatGPT 4 is far more insightful than its previous and free older brother, hence it’s a more adequate choice if one searches for most up-to-date resolutions.

6. Automated Code Generation: Developers can utilize Chat GPT to generate code snippets based on user requirements or specifications. It can assist in automating repetitive coding tasks and aid in rapid prototyping or generating boilerplate code. And as unorthodox this may sound – a good code that lingers in the realm of chat’s AI flow will benefit hundreds if not thousands of developers worldwide up on each others account – so a good code is at the end of the day just good work of collective community that inputs, accepts and then uses it.

These are just a few examples and the potential applications of Chat GPT in IT are . Its flexibility, language understanding capabilities and versatility make it a valuable tool for automating tasks and replacing the good ol’ search engines. On the other hand, it not omnipotent nor without a flaw – even if its results may visually appeal and seem academic it’s crucial to double check with reliable sources if the results are at all correct.

And to wrap up: Sam Altman, CEO of ChatGPTs maker, OpenAI had signed an open letter, in which he stated and warns that unregulated AI could be THE asteroid that wipes out humanity. As grotesque as these words sound, it might be wise to take these words with a pinch of salt as ChatGPT continuously ranks as the fastest-growing app in history. Whilst the predictions about AI are purely hypothetical, it is only to state the obvious that it truly had real-world consequences only its 1st year.
