Evolve

Modernization of legacy embedded products

Your devices have been on the market for years, components are going end-of-life and the code needs a refresh or better security. We modernise them without stopping production.

Typical scenarios

MCU migration

Moving to a supported microcontroller family when the current one is discontinued.

Bare-metal to RTOS or Linux

Restructuring firmware when features outgrow a super-loop. See RTOS development.

Refactoring legacy C

Tests first, then step-by-step refactoring of code nobody wants to touch.

Board redesign after EOL

Replacing obsolete parts while keeping form factor — with hardware & PCB design.

OTA and security retrofit

Adding secure updates and secure boot to products already in the field.

Migration from old PLCs

Porting control logic to current platforms — see industrial automation & PLC.

Initial audit

Before changing anything we find out what you have.

  1. 01

    Inventory

Code, toolchain, hardware revisions, components and their lifecycle status.

  2. 02

    Risk map

End-of-life parts, untested areas, security gaps and single points of knowledge.

  3. 03

    Plan

Options with effort, risk and order of work — including what can stay unchanged.

Modernization without stopping production

Changes are introduced in steps that can be released and verified separately. Existing behaviour is captured in tests before refactoring, and new hardware revisions are validated alongside the old ones.

Why the CRA matters for devices already on the market

CRA reporting obligations apply since 11 September 2026 also to products placed on the market earlier. Devices without a secure update path are hard to fix when a vulnerability is reported. Read more in cybersecurity & CRA.

Long-term support

After modernization we can maintain the product: security patches, component monitoring and obsolescence management. Modernization of business applications is covered by BCF Cloud & Data.
